Mamoru's Calligraphy

Mamoru has chosen 守拙 (Shusetsu) as his artist’s name. The first character 守 (shu) is the same as his first name 守 (Mamoru) and it means “to keep/follow/guard/protect,” and the second character 拙 (setsu) means “unskillful/ clumsy/awkward.” Therefore, his artist’s name,守拙 (Shusetsu) means “to keep being unskillful.”

While he is aware of importance of improving skills, Mamoru also knows danger of depending on only skills. He would like to be in the moment, feel and be with the flow of the brush, the character of the ink, the smoothness/ resistance of the paper. With awareness of his tolls and medium, Mamoru expresses himself through his depiction of letters, characters, shapes, and colors.

Mamoru would like to go beyond existing styles, forms, and tools, and be playful and experimental with new ways. He pursues playfulness and experimentation, and as a result, his artwork fills into anywhere between concrete and abstract. Sometimes his work will include words in English.

Mamoru hopes you will enjoy this current artwork: created by him, as person who is still struggling to put his spirit into his art. He hopes that the artwork will touch your heart.
