Mamoru's Calligraphy

Mamoru mainly engraves heart sutra and poems from Tang Dynasty in stones. Mamoru has been interested in Buddhism since he was young, and he chants the Heart Sutra every morning. The essence of Mahayana Buddhism is written in only 260 Chinese characters in this sutra. Chanting the Heart Sutra calms his mind, and it is like Zen meditation for him. Teaching in Buddhism, especially the Heart Sutra is a philosophy about life for him rather than a religion. The Heart Sutra is also believed to have some power to remove/ expel/exorcise/purify evil spirits. Mamoru engraves the Heart Sutra being aware of that.

A lot of the poets from Tang Dynasty were bureaucrats subject to the whims and politics of the time. During a change of regime, the status, stature and employment of the poets was likely to change for better or for worse. Mamoru sees the universality of transience in their poems and their feelings as if they were his.

Unlike many traditional Artists; when Mamoru places both calligraphy and a seal(s) in one artwork, he weights each component equally.
